art deco character UV

For those of you who are fortunate enough to not know what UVing is... let me elaborate. It is the tedious and painful process of making sure a texture doesn't stretch on a character. You do this by laying them out like so:

You know you've played the game right when you apply a texture map of a checkered bored, and all of the squares are uniform and...well...square. That way, you know there will be no stretching when you apply the real textures!

and this is just the edge loops.

UPDATE!

So here are a few stills from the previs I am working on. Just to show you some work seeing as how the playblast is being a bit stubborn. I am about to start working on textures for Art Deco girl!! I plan to get the textures for the frames, hallway wall, Forest, gears, and some other random stuff done this weekend. ALSO, MUST WORK ON WATER COLOR GIRL ASAP! She is feeling neglected, sorry baby sister :(

Animatic!

SOOOO time for some updates! I am moving along rather smoothly in terms of my production schedule. Character UV's put me a little behind but I think all will be fine. So here is my progress so far. This is the original animatic for the film.  The timing is a little weird but I think you will get the gist. The Previs for the hallway is soon to come. It is just a test for the plane and camera movement in the middle of the film. There will be a lot of cool things happening with the interaction between the plane and the paintings which I am really looking forward to mastering.

ANIMATIC

Here is a random shot of the modeled frames.  Just thought I would throw that in there.

Hallway!!

These are a few references as to what the final hallway will look like. NO floor, NO ceilings...just paintings. everywhere! I am debating on whether or not I should create the lighting and texture to mimic a real hallway of paintings and have a texture over the projected paintings that I create to give them a glare from the light.... any thoughts? So what I would do is animate Art Deco for example, render her, project her into her painting and render that.

Notice the canvas texture and how light effects the canvas.

story boards

I am having some difficulties uploading my animatic, so for now we shall have to settle for the next best thing. STORYBOARDS! They are a brief over view of what will be going on in the film. I tried to include some references for the look of each painting so you have an idea of what is going on there. I will have the animatic up as soon as I figure it out.

Character Design

So my two main characters are Art Deco girl and Watercolor girl.  Art Deco girl is the older sister in the story, and Watercolor girl is the younger. Here are my designs and models for each character. My models were completed by the wonderful Nate Usiak and are in the process of getting Uvs. As of right now Jenna is working on Art Deco girl's basic rig as I finish up the Uvs. I will then give here the final model so she can bind the skin to the rig and do facial blend shapes

.

Art Direction

This is where I pulled my inspiration from for the picture frames. There will be a lot of different design elements as well as 2d textures involved, which will then be projected into a 3d space.

A brief look into my Senior Film

So here I am, at the crucial stage of actually putting my great ideas for this film into motion. I wanted to give you a brief over view of what I have as far as concept and art direction, and then I will update through out my whole production process.

Dear Rinni

 Directed By Susan DeVenero

Concept: Communication between two people is never impossible.

Format: 3d, 2d mixed media

Duration: 2 minutes

Idea: This film is about communication between two sisters who are far apart.
.
Objective: To make the audience feel as though they are traveling with the plane to get to its destination.  The audience should connect with the idea that loved ones are not always a close distance away.  This idea of communication and travel reinforces the love that the two sisters share for one another and shows how important it is to stay connected.

Synopsis: An art deco styled girl misses her water color sister. She writes her a note and folds it into a plane. She throws the paper airplane and it takes us through the world they live in, getting into trouble along the way. It finally makes it to the water color girl, who is happy to hear from her sister.

Story:
A plethora of paintings on a hallway wall are shown.  The focus changes to an art deco style painting. A girl is shown fixing her hair at a makeup table. All of a sudden she turns her head to see if anyone is looking. She leans over and grabs a picture off of the mirror. She smiles at a picture of her and her water colored sister making funny faces.  She puts the picture down and finishes writing a letter. The letter then gets folded into a paper airplane, which she throws. The plane travels left, leaving a trail of lines in its path. It travels into a cubist style cityscape, weaving in and out of the buildings. It flies out and back into a painting of turning gears. The plane gets caught in the gears, travels through the painting and shoots out the left of the frame. All that is left is the trail the plane left behind. We follow the trail up and around and eventually catch up with the plane.  The plane is the focus of the shot again and now fills up most of the frame. It travels through paintings which are moving behind in the background. As it travels through each painting it changes style. The plane starts to go faster and faster until the background is just a blur. All of a sudden it hits a tree. The plane is stuck and has no hope of reaching its destination. Out of the darkness a bird flies in, landing on the branch where the plane is stuck. It pecks the plane, which falls out of the branch. It glides down through the forest and falls out of the frame. It enters a water color painting, falling to the ground. Two feet walk up to it and hands are seen picking up the plane. The water color sister is shown reading the note, smiling fondly at her sister’s words. She freezes into a painting and the camera zooms out to show that there are many different colored lines from different planes going into every painting.
